NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware scored six unearned runs on three errors by UNC Wilmington on its way to an 8-6 Colonial Athletic Association victory on Saturday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.
Alex Buchholz had a pair of hits and RBI for the Hens (13-16, 7-7 CAA), while Danny Overcash and Adam Tsakonas each homered. Mark Carver had three hits for the Seahawks (16-22, 8-9 CAA). The win extended Delaware’s season-best winning streak to six games.
Delaware scored two of its unearned runs in the first inning. With no one on and two outs, Buchholz and Bryan Hagerich each recorded singles. Tsakonas followed with a high drive to centerfield that was dropped by Seahawks centerfielder Bobby Leeper. Buchholz and Hagerich scored to give the Hens a two-run advantage.
The Seahawks loaded the bases with one out in the second inning. Justin Barefoot then singled through the left side for an RBI, but Leeper was caught between second and third for the second out of the inning, leaving runners on the corners with two outs. With a 2-2 count on Grayson Evans, Barefoot took off for second and when the throw went down, Nate Hall broke for home. Buchholz then fired home to Bill Merkler, who tagged Hall for the third out.
On the first pitch of the bottom of the second from UNCW starter Jeff Hatcher, Overcash lined his fifth home run of the season over the wall in leftcenter to restore the two-run Blue Hen lead.
In the third, the Seahawks got a leadoff double for the second straight inning, this one from Grayson Evans. Evans moved to third on a groundout by Matt Holt and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Daniel Hargrave to make the game 3-2.
The Hens scored five times to go up 8-2 in the fourth. Tsakonas led off with his second home run of the season, and after retiring the next two batters, Hatcher appeared to be out of the inning when Scott Shockley tapped a ball right back to him. However, Hatcher badley overthrew the first baseman Hargrave and Shockley ended up on third. Davis and Jablonski then walked and a wild pitch scored Shockley and advanced the other two runners. Menchaca walked to reload the bases, and Buchholz singled through the left side for two RBI. After Hagerich was hit by a pitch, Tsakonas reached on an error that scored Menchaca with the fifth and final run of the inning. In all the Hens scored five runs on only two hits, a wild pitch and two UNCW errors.
The Seahawks scored once in the top of the fifth and had runners on first and second with one out, but Delaware starter Billy Harris struck out Hargrave and Steve Halford to end the inning. The Seahawks put two runners on with no outs in the top of the sixth. Shane French then doubled down the leftfield line to bring in a run and leave runners at second and third with no outs. Chad Kerfoot came in from the bullpen and got a groundout from Leeper that brought in a run. He then struck out Barefoot before Evans reached on an error. Holt then singled through the legs of Kerfoot to bring in an unearned run and cut the lead to 8-6. Pinch-hitter Jes Snyder popped up to second to end the inning.
In the top of the eighth, Kerfoot walked French to start the inning and was then replaced by closer David Slovak. Slovak (right) got Leeper to line back through the middle, but Slovak snared it with his glove and was able to double off pinch runner Marc Locklear. After a hit and an error put two runners on, Slovak struck out Holt to end the inning and then put the Seahawks down in four batters in the ninth to earn his third save in the last three games and fifth of the season.
Harris struck out four in five innings to earn his third win, while Hatcher took the loss to fall to 4-3.
The Hens and Seahawks will wrap up their series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
