CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA -- The University of Virginia scored 11 runs over the first five innings on its way to an 11-2 non-conference win over the University of Delaware on Friday afternoon at Davenport Field in Charlottesville.

Brandon Guyer had two hits and scored three runs, while Sean Doolittle struck out nine and allowed two runs in six innings and added a hit and a run scored for the Cavaliers (12-1).

Alex Buchholz had two hits and an RBI for the Blue Hens (0-4) and Brad Miller (at right) pitched four scoreless innings of relief and struck out four batters in his collegiate debut.

Virginia was staked to an early lead with a four-run second inning. With the bases loaded and no outs, Cavalier third baseman Tyler Cannon doubled down the leftfield line to bring home the first two runs of the game. After a squeeze bunt by Mike Mitchell brought in the third Virginia run, Greg Miclat singled to left to bring in Cannon for a 4-0 adavantage. The Cavaliers added two unearned runs in the third inning to go up 6-0.

Delaware got on the board when Adam Tsakonas’ two-out single brought home Brandon Menchaca from second to cut the deficit to 6-1, but Virginia countered with two more runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning.

After the Hens scored again in the top of the fifth inning, the Cavs added three more in their half to mount an 11-2 lead that would not be threatened. Doolittle earned the win to move to 5-0 on the season, while Billy Harris took the loss for Delaware to drop to 0-1.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow in game two of the series at 1 p.m. with Matt Heppner on the mound for the Blue Hens against Jacob Thompson for the Cavaliers.
