CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA -- Patrick Wingfield’s third inning grand slam was the key blow for the University of Virginia in a 10-4 non-conference win over the University of Delaware on Saturday afternoon at Davenport Field.

Alex Buchholz, Ryan Cuneo (at right) and Brandon Menchaca all had two hits for the Hens, while Scott Shockley reached base three times.

Delaware (0-5) took the lead in the top of the second inning. Cuneo led off with a triple and then came home on a single by Shockley to give the Hens their first lead of the series. Virginia answered back with three in the bottom half, highlighted by a two-run single to rightfield by nine-hole hitter Tim Henry.

The No. 7 Cavaliers (13-1) took hold of the game in their half of the third inning. After recording the first two outs uneventfully, Delaware starter Matt Heppner lost the strike zone, walking David Adams and Brandon Guyer and hitting Beau Seabury. The first baseman Wingfield then launched Heppner’s next pitch over the wall in left field for a grand slam that gave Virginia a 7-1 lead.

After the Cavaliers added three more in the fourth, the Hens added two of their own in the seventh when Brandon Menchaca tripled with one on and Buchholz drove him in with a sacrifice fly to right that cut the lead to 10-3. Menchaca’s second triple of the day set up the last Delaware run when Buchholz followed with a double to right center.

Menchaca’s two triples give him 14 for his career and move him into a three-way tie for eighth place in school history.

Jacob Thompson allowed one run and struck out eight in six innings to pick up the win and improve to 4-0, while Heppner took the loss for Delaware to drop to 0-2.

The two teams will close out the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. when Brent Gaphardt takes the hill for the Blue Hens against Matt Packer for the Cavaliers.
