CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA -- Brandon Marsh’s single with one out in the ninth brought home Mike Mitchell with the winning run as the No. 7 University of Virginia baseball team completed a sweep of the University of Delaware with a 3-2 win on Sunday afternoon at Davenport Field.
Ryan Jablonski, Bryan Hagerich and Kyle Davis had two hits each for the Hens, while Brandon Menchaca (at right) had two hits and two RBI.
Mitchell led off the ninth by getting hit by a Todd Ozog pitch, advanced to second and then scored when Marsh drove a single to leftfield off Delaware reliever David Slovak. The win was the 12th straight for the Cavaliers (14-1) who are now a perfect 12-0 at home.
In the top of the fifth the Hens (0-6) used a two-out rally to build a 2-0 lead. With no one on and two outs, Davis singled to left and Jablonski followed with a walk. Menchaca then drove a 2-2 pitch into the gap in right center for his third triple in two games, bringing home Davis and Jablonski and chasing Cavalier starter Matt Packer from the game.
Delaware narrowly missed adding to its lead in the sixth. Bill Merkler led off by reaching on an error and Hagerich followed with a double to centerfield. However, Merkler was thrown out at the plate and Hagerich advanced to third on the throw home. After Ryan Cuneo was walked intentionally, Virginia called on Alex Smith from the bullpen to retire pinch-hitter Scott Shockley and then called on Jake Rule, the third pitcher of the inning, to retire Dan Richardson and end the Delaware threat.
Virginia cut the Delaware lead in half in the bottom of the sixth. Seabury led off by getting hit by a pitch, advanced to third on a single by Saturday’s hero Patrick Wingfield and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Cannon.
Virginia tied the game in the bottom of the seventh. After loading the bases with no one out against the new Delaware pitcher, Ozog, Ozog induced a double play ground ball from David Adams that tied the score and left a runner on third. He then retired Guyer to end the inning and preserve the tie.
The Hens threatened in the top of the ninth, putting runners on the corners with only one out, but Virginia reliever Michael Schwimer struck out Menchaca and then got Alex Buchholz to pop up to get out of the jam.
Brent Gaphardt started and struck out two in two scoreless innings for the Hens. Schwimer got the win for the Cavaliers to move to 1-0, while Ozog absorbed the loss for the Hens to fall to 0-2.
The Hens will return to action on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. when they take on Rider.
