NEWARK, DE -- Brandon Menchaca recorded four hits and scored twice and David Slovak (right) recorded his eighth save of the season to tie a school single-season record to help the University of Delaware earn its seventh straight win, 10-6, on Friday afternoon against Colonial Athletic Association rival the College of William & Mary.
Alex Buchholz had two hits to extend his hitting streak to 11 games, and Adam Tsakonas had a home run and three RBI for the Blue Hens (21-18, 12-9 CAA). The Hens have won seven straight overall, five straight in conference play and eight straight at home.
The Tribe (26-22, 11-13 CAA) put runners on second and third with one out in the top of the first. Blue Hen starter Billy Harris then struck out Brent McWhorter and then walked Robbie Nickle to load the bases. Harris then struck out Greg Maliniak on a 3-2 pitch to end the inning and leave the bases loaded.
The Hens took the lead in their half of the first. With runners on first and third and two outs, a balk was called on Tribe starter Pete Vernon, bringing home Buchholz for a 1-0 lead.
Delaware extended its lead to 2-0 in the second. Danny Overcash lined a one-out triple over the head of centerfielder Ben Guez. Scott Shockley followed with an RBI groundout to score Overcash and stake the Hens to the two-run lead.
William & Mary got on the board in the top of the ffth. With runners on the corners and one out, Greg Sexton fisted a single to leftfield to bring in the first run for the Tribe. McWhorter then hit a tailor made double play ball, but the exchange was bobbled by Buchholz and no outs were recorded. Nickle then crushed an 1-2 pitch over the wall in left for a grand slam that put the Tribe up 5-2.
The Hens got two back in their half of the fifth. Ryan Jablonski and Menchaca led off with singles, and then Buchholz’ double scored Jablonski. Bryan Hagerich’s sacrifice fly scored Menchaca to bring the Hens to within 5-4. The Hens tied the game when Overcash scored for the second time on the day, this time when the third baseman Sexton missed a two-out grounder from Jablonski that would have gotten the Tribe out of the inning.
Delaware took the lead in the bottom of the seventh. The Hens loaded the bases with one out, and Shockley’s second RBI groundout of the day put the Hens up 6-5. Kyle Davis followed with a single to second base that scored another run to give the Hens a 7-5 lead.
The Hens added three more in the bottom of the eighth with Tsakonas’ three-run homer, a bomb off Tribe reliever Pat Kantakevich to give the Hens a 10-5 lead.
Harris picked up the win for the Hens to move to 5-1 on the season, while Vernon took the loss to fall to 7-5. Slovak earned his eighth save to tie the mark of eight set by Bob Koontz in 1988 and by Scott Gellert in 1997.
The Hens and Tribe continue their series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
