NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware baseball team scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning on its way to an 8-3 win over the College of William & Mary Sunday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium to finish off its second consecutive Colonial Athletic Association series sweep.
Danny Overcash (right) had two hits and three RBI on the day, while Mike McGuire struck out four in five innings of work to pick up his second win of the season. Alex Buchholz had a two-RBI triple to extend his hitting streak to 13 games.
The win was the ninth in a row for the Blue Hens (23-18, 14-9 CAA), including seven straight in conference play to match their longest conference winning streak since joining the CAA in 2002. After a rocky start, the Blue Hens have gone 17-3 since a 13-inning loss to Georgia State on April 1.
The Hens sprinted out to a 5-0 lead in their half of the third inning. After Scott Shockley walked with one out, Kyle Davis hit his first home run of the season to left to put the Hens up 2-0. With Ryan Jablonski and Brandon Menchaca aboard, Buchholz then tripled to center to score two more runs. Buchholz then scored on a sacfrifce fly from Bryan Hagerich to give the Hens the five-run advantage.
After the Tribe (26-24, 11-15 CAA) got a run in the top of the sixth, the Hens scored three more runs in their half of the sixth on Danny Overcash’s sixth home run of the season. At this point the Hens held an 8-1 advantage that was never seriously threatened.
McGuire picked up the win in his best effort of the season, while Tribe starter Tyler Truxell took the loss to fall to 4-6. David Slovak came on with two runners on base in the ninth and did not allow a baserunner to earn his ninth save.
The Hens return to action on Tuesday when they play at Temple at 3 p.m.
