NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware baseball team will begin its fall season on September 18 when the Blue Hens compete in the first of their 14 intra-squad scrimmages this year, head coach Jim Sherman announced today.

Along with intra-squad contests, Delaware will also battle three other colleges during its fall campaign. On September 25, the Hens will take on Cecil Community College, while they will square off with local rivals Delaware State on October 9 and Wilmington University on October 22.

All games will be held at Bob Hannah Stadium and are slated to begin at 3 p.m.

As usual, Delaware will cap its fall schedule by playing a three-game intra-squad Blue-Grey World Series. Game one will be held on October 16, while the final two contests are scheduled for October 20 and 24, respectively.

Entering the 2009 season, Delaware will be led by a strong corps of upperclassmen. Senior catcher Ryan Reed (at right) will lead the pack after earning the Most Valuable Player Award last year. He will be joined by Kyle Davis, who received the team’s Defensive Player of the Year Award, and Ryan Cuneo, who was honored with the team’s top offensive accolades.

The Hens will kick off their regular season schedule on February 20-22 with a four-game series against Longwood in Virginia.
