LAKE BUENA VISTA, FL -- University of Delaware seniors Dan Richardson and Mike McGuire were both selected on the final day of the Major League Baseball draft held at The Milk House on location in Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex on Friday.

The two right-handed pitchers were the second and third Blue Hens chosen in the 2008 draft after junior infielder Alex Buchholz was taken in the sixth round yesterday. Delaware has now had at least two players taken in each of the last three drafts.

Richardson (top right), a senior from Bear, DE, was picked in the 38th round by the St. Louis Cardinals. As a senior, the righty moved exclusively to the mound after also serving as an outfielder during each of his first three seasons. He made 13 appearances, including seven starts, while posting a 4.97 ERA and 28 strikeouts over 41.2 innings of work.

The 2008 recipient of the team sportsmanship award, Richardson finished his career with a 2-1 record to go along with 35 strikeouts in 52.1 innings. On the offensive side of the ball, the former Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American hit .287 with 16 home runs and 29 stolen bases in 115 games.

McGuire (bottom right), a senior from Swarthmore, PA, was drafted in the 43rd round by the Cleveland athlete photoIndians. He was also picked in the 46th round of last year’s draft by the Cincinnati Reds but opted to return for his senior season. He is the first Blue Hen to get selected twice since Kris Dufner was taken in the 2002 and 2003 drafts.

During the 2008 campaign, McGuire led the Blue Hens with six wins, 71 strikeouts, and 76.2 innings pitched. Over his career, the hard-throwing right-hander posted a 16-12 record and currently stands ninth all-time in program history with 210 strikeouts. A Colonial Athletic Association All-Rookie pick in 2005, he also garnered All-Tournament honors in 2007 when he fired 8.1 innings of no-hit ball against the top-seeded Old Dominion Monarchs in the CAA Championship semifinals.

Richardson and McGuire were two of the 18 players from the conference selected on the second day of the draft. Overall, the CAA saw 22 players taken after four were picked during the first six rounds yesterday.
