NEWARK, DE -- Jared Olson roped three extra-base hits and Mike McGuire fired seven strong innings to help the University of Delaware baseball team snap its 10-game skid with a 5-2 victory over Northeastern during a Colonial Athletic Association showdown at Bob Hannah Stadium on Friday afternoon.

Olson helped pace the Blue Hen offense as the junior went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a triple. McGuire (at right) also dominated on the mound for Delaware (4-11, 1-3 CAA), scattering seven hits while striking out eight during his seven innings of work.

The Blue Hens broke the game open early as they jumped on Northeastern (6-5, 0-1) with a five-run first. After Delaware loaded the bases with only one out following walks to Kyle Davis and Alex Buchholz along with a single by Bill Merkler, Ryan Reed roped a two-run single down the right field line which plated Davis and Buchholz. Then Olson and Pat Dameron capped off the rally with back-to-back doubles which put the Hens up, 5-0.

Northeastern answered with a single run in the top of the second after Mike Lyon led off with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on an RBI fielder’s choice by Josh Porter.

The Hens best chance to score after the opening frame came in the third when Dameron roped a single and advanced to third on a hit by Ryan Cuneo with only one out. However, the Huskies quieted the rally after pitcher Kris Dabrowiecki handled a ball hit back to the mound and gunned down Dameron at the plate.

In a game filled with good defense, Huskie second baseman Ryan Maguire provided the highlight of the day in the bottom of the fourth, laying out to snag a pop up by Buchholz with a spectacular over-the-shoulder grab in short right field. He followed up his play in the field by starting a small Northeastern rally in the top of the fifth. After he worked a one-out walk, the freshman advanced to second on a single by Tony DiCesare, moved to third on a fielder’s choice, and scored on a single by Mike Tamsin.

Following the inning, McGuire fell back into his grove, striking out three during his last two innings of work before handing the ball off to closer David Slovak in the eighth.

After two perfect innings out of the bullpen, Slovak picked up his second save of the season. With it, he tied Bob Koontz for second on the Hens’ all-time career saves list with 14. Slovak now stands just four shy of tying Scott Gellert’s mark of 18.

McGuire (2-1) picked up the win, while Kris Dabrowiecki (0-1) took the loss after surrendering all of Delaware’s runs during his six innings of work.

The Blue Hens will return to action tomorrow to cap off the series with a doubleheader slated to begin at 12 noon. The teams had planned to play single games on Saturday and Sunday but decided to double-up due to the impending weather on Sunday.
