NEWARK, Del. – Guided by a four-run fourth-inning, the Gray squad broke an early tie and came away with a 10-6 victory over the Blue team in the final game of the University of Delaware baseball team’s fall classic on Wednesday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.
With the victory, the Gray squad captured the best-of-three championship. After dropping the first game of the series, the squad won the last two to take the title.
Outfielder Eric Buckland led the victors, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles. The freshman also scored three runs and drove in two during the contest.
Fellow first-year standout Chris Branigan and transfer catcher Aaron Mascoe also had strong days for the Gray. After posting two RBI in each of the first two games of the series, Branigan returned to the diamond to knock in two more while going 3-for-4 with two doubles.
Mascoe also went 2-for-3 with a game-high four RBI for the Gray. He posted the biggest hit of the day as well, launching a three-run blast.
Matt Harden benefited from the run support and picked up the win. The junior reliever scattered two hits and struck out one over two innings of work.
Junior second baseman Pat Dameron (above) led the Blue team, going a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate. He ripped a pair of doubles, knocked in two, and scored four of the team’s six runs.
First baseman Ryan Cuneo also had a strong performance, going 2-for-5 with an RBI and run scored. Dave Anderson rounded out the game's offensive stars after posting two hits, including a triple, during the seven-inning contest.
The squad will reunite for one final scrimmage during the fall season as the Blue Hens play host to Wilmington University tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.
