NEWARK, Del. – Highlighted by a barrage of home runs, the University of Delaware baseball team opened up its annual Blue/Grey World Series as the Blue squad topped the Grey, 13-11, at Bob Hannah Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

Despite a late four-run rally by the Grey team in the bottom of the seventh, the Blue squad hung on to grab a one-game lead in the best-of-three series.

During the contest, the two teams combined for eight home runs, including five by the Grey squad. Danny Overcash led the way with a pair of two-run shots, while six other Blue Hens also went deep.

Overcash eventually finished the day with three hits, while Kyle Davis (at right) also went 3-for-4 with three RBI. Pat Dameron helped contribute to the potent attack as well, slamming a two-run shot while adding a double.

Freshman Sam Cerbo, an incoming recruit from Don Bosco Prep, also held his own, chipping in with two hits, including a double. Sophomore Matt Harden benefited from the onslaught, picking up the win after firing five innings of work.

For the Grey, Josh Dean led the way with a 3-for-5 performance. He blasted a home run and also added two singles and a pair of RBI. Freshman Nick Rivers also had a strong debut, posting two doubles and a home run to go along with three RBI.

Jared Olson, who finished second on the team last year with 11 home runs, remained hot in the fall, posting two hits including a home run. First-year standout Mike O’Keeffe also finished 2-for-3 with a three-run shot.

The team will continue play next week when Delaware takes on Wilmington University on Wednesday at 3 p.m. The Hens will then conclude the Blue/Grey World Series with Game 2 on Thursday and Game 3 on Friday. Both contests are slated to start at 3 p.m.
