SECAUCUS, N.J. – University of Delaware shortstop Kyle Davis was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 27th round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Wednesday afternoon.
Davis, a senior co-captain for the Blue Hens, was the lone Delaware player chosen on the second day of the draft. He was the 823rd overall selection and the 29th pick by the White Sox.
A four-year member of the Hens, Davis appeared in 191 games with 184 starts during his stint in Newark. Over that time, he posted a .281 batting average with 13 home runs and 97 RBI.
A slick-fielding middle infielder, he earned Delaware’s Defensive Player of the Year Award during each of the last two seasons. Last year, as a junior, he split time between shortstop and second base before taking over at shortstop full-time during his senior campaign.
This season, Davis played an integral role in leading Delaware to the Colonial Athletic Association tournament. A starter in all 48 games, he hit .262 with 31 runs scored. During the team’s playoff appearance, he posted at least one hit in every game including a key home run in the squad’s 9-5 victory over Northeastern.
As a junior, after transitioning to the top of the batting order, the right-handed speedster finished third in the Colonial Athletic Association with 22 doubles. He also led the Blue Hens with 66 hits and 50 runs scored out of the lead-off position.
During his first two seasons with the team, Davis started 90 games and hit .283 with 56 runs scored. As a freshman, he ranked fourth on the team with a .328 batting average, while he stood third on the squad with a .358 on-base percentage during his sophomore season.
With Davis’ selection, the Blue Hens have now had one middle infielder picked during three of the last four drafts. In 2006, the Baltimore Orioles selected shortstop Todd Davison in the 19th round, while the Cincinnati Reds chose Alex Buchholz, Davis’ longtime double-play partner, in the sixth round last season.
Davis is also the third Delaware infielder selected by the White Sox since 2000. In 2001, the team picked Andrew Salvo in the 22nd round, while the squad chose Kris Dufner in the 26th round in 2002.
The Major League Draft will conclude tomorrow with rounds 31-50.
