NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware baseball team will honor four of its alumni on Saturday morning during the team’s annual homecoming tailgate beginning at 9:30 a.m.
There is no cost for the event, which will be held at the tent in the corner of the football practice field closest to Bob Hannah Stadium. Food and beverages will be provided by UD Dining Services.
At the tailgate, the members of the 2008-09 team will introduce themselves, while the Blue Hens will honor Joe Flickinger, Steve Harden, Jeff Taylor (at right), and Jason Vincent for their outstanding contributions to the program during their careers at Delaware.
Flickinger was a member of the Blue Hen baseball team from 1969-71. A starting first baseman, he helped lead Delaware to the 1970 College World Series where he was one of three players to record a hit in both of the team’s games in Omaha. He also added an RBI single in the fifth inning against Texas that chased Longhorn ace and future Major League All-Star Burt Hooten from the game.
A talented base-runner and captain of the 1971 team, he posted 22 stolen bases on just 27 attempts, including a team-leading 10 during his final campaign. Appearing in 68 games, he roped 52 hits and posted a career-high 26 during the team’s run to the World Series.
Harden was a four-year standout as both a first baseman and reliever from 2000-03. During his tenure, he played in 216 games, marking the third highest total in Blue Hen history. His 33 home runs and 159 RBI also rank 12th all-time, while his seven saves are the fifth most among Delaware closers.
A former freshman All-American, he won the Delaware Triple Crown as a senior after leading the team with a .302 batting average, 12 home runs, and 43 RBI. A co-captain on the 2003 squad, he was named the Most Valuable Player while also earning the club’s Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year honors.
Taylor was a three-year standout for the Blue Hens as both a pitcher and catcher. In his first season, he posted a perfect 5-0 record to go along with a 3.86 ERA. Two years later, he led the team with eight wins while adding a 2.76 ERA and 56 strikeouts as a senior.
A two-time Major League Daft pick including a ninth-round selection of the Yankees in 1978, he finished his career with a 13-4 record and a 3.23 ERA over 136.1 innings of work. During his 392 career at bats, he also recorded 93 hits with six home runs, 53 RBI and 45 runs scored.
Vincent was a four-year ace for the Blue Hens during his tenure from 2000-03. Over that time, he fired 309.2 innings, which ranks as the third-most all-time. His three career shutouts, including one during the 2001 America East title game, are the fifth-most in program history, while his 24 wins and 17 complete games rank seventh and eighth, respectively.
A freshman All-American in 2000 after posting a 7-3 record and a 3.15 ERA, he followed that up with a nine-win campaign as a sophomore. He eventually capped off his career with a 24-15 record, 193 strikeouts, and a 4.49 ERA.
