NEWARK, Del. - Behind a potent offensive attack that recorded 22 hits, the University of Delaware baseball team cruised to a 16-5 victory over Marist on Saturday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.

Six Blue Hens posted three hits on the day, including Ryan Cuneo and Pat Dameron who also added home runs. Cuneo finished the day with a team-high five RBI, while Carlos Alonso (at right) had three hits, two walks, and four runs scored.

Ryan Reed also went 3-for-5, marking his third straight three-hit game. Chris Nehl and Kyle Davis chipped in with three hits as well, while Scott Shockley launched his third home run of the season.

During their first trip to the plate, the Blue Hens opened the scoring with five runs in the bottom of the first. Alonso led off with a walk, stole second, and scored on a single to right by Cuneo. Nehl followed with a sinking single to left that brought in the team’s second run before Bill Merkler lifted a long fly ball to center that chased home Nehl.

Shockley capped the scoring after parking a two-run shot down the leftfield line. His blast gave the Blue Hens a 5-0 lead.

Not satisfied with a five-run advantage, Delaware immediately came back to tack on six more over the next two innings. In the second, Cuneo and Nehl knocked in runs before the team exploded for four more in the third.

Reed led off the four-run rally with a single and came around to score on a ringing double to center by Dameron. Following a walk to Alonso, Cuneo came through with a three-run blast off the scoreboard in right field.

Although Blue Hen starter Will Blackman was charged with three earned runs over the next two frames, Delaware’s large lead was never really in doubt. Marist chipped its deficit down to seven at 11-4 in the fifth, but reliever Brad Miller came in and shut down the Red Fox attack.

Surrendering just one unearned run over the final five innings of play, the junior righty struck out six and kept the game out of reach.

With Miller dealing, the Blue Hens struck for two more in the bottom of the seventh after a bases-loaded wild pitch brought in Alonso and a double by Merkler chased home Nehl. Dameron then capped the scoring with one last big hit in the bottom of the eighth as the sophomore second baseman clocked a solo shot to right.

Miller earned the win with his masterful relief appearance, while B.J. Martin took the loss after allowing seven earned in just one inning of work.

The Hens and Foxes will conclude their three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
