COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Following a strong offensive showing over the weekend, the University of Delaware baseball team was quieted by Maryland during a 6-1 setback in a non-conference showdown at Shipley Field on Tuesday afternoon.
After scoring 42 runs in their four-game series against Manhattan, the Blue Hens were held to just a single run by the powerful Maryland pitching staff. Carlos Alonso roped two doubles and scored Delaware’s lone run, while Ryan Reed went 3-for-4.
Eric Potter started for Maryland (5-7), allowing just one unearned run on three hits in four innings of work. Ian Schwalenberg Adam Kolarek, and Dan Gentzler followed suit with strong pitching performances, blanking the Blue Hen offense over the final five innings of play.
With the victory, Maryland remained unbeaten at home in five contests this season.
After the Terrapins opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the second, Delaware (6-6) shot back in the third with a short two-out rally. Alonso started the threat with a ringing double to right center. The junior speedster moved to third after Ryan Cuneo smacked a sharp grounder to shortstop and scored on a subsequent throwing error.
With the score knotted at one, Maryland broke free, scoring five unanswered runs over the next four innings. During the streak, A.J. Casario chipped in with a two-run home run, while Dan Benick also knocked in a pair.
Although Delaware put runners in scoring position during the fourth and eighth innings, the team could not chase one home. The Maryland staff held the Hens scoreless over the final six innings of play to lock up the five-run victory.
Freshmen Michael O’Keeffe and Sam Cerbo both worked scoreless innings out of the Delaware bullpen, combining to allow just one hit during the seventh and eighth.
Potter (1-0) picked up the win for Maryland, while Devon Pearson (0-2) took the loss after allowing two runs on three hits in his three innings of work.
Delaware will return to the diamond on Friday at 3 p.m. when the team kicks off a three-game series with Marist at Bob Hannah Stadium.
