NEWARK, Del. – Rising seniors Carlos Alonso and Ryan Cuneo highlighted a group of University of Delaware standouts that were honored for their performances in various summer baseball leagues around the nation.

Cuneo (above right) wrapped up an incredible showing during his summer-long stint in the prestigious Cape Cod League. Earlier in the season, he earned a spot as the starting designated hitter in the All-Star game. During the rain-shortened contest, he drew a walk in two plate appearances at Fenway Park.

Following the conclusion of the season, he was once again honored as one of the top players in the league. For his efforts throughout the year, he garnered a spot on the 26-man All-League team. Cuneo was one of only three members of his Hyannis Mets squad to earn the honor and one of only two, along with UNC Wilmington’s Cody Stanley, to earn it from the Colonial Athletic Association.

During the year, he appeared in 42 games and provided a powerful punch to the Hyannis lineup. He led the team with five home runs, which was more than half of the entire squad’s total. He also led the way with 43 hits, 10 doubles, and 29 RBI.

Overall, his 15 extra-base hits ranked second in the Cape Cod League, while his 10 doubles and 29 RBI were the third most by any player.

Alonso (below right) had a strong summer season as well. After beginning the year alongside Athlete photoCuneo in the Cape Cod League, he later joined the Anchorage Glacier Pilots of the Alaska League. After appearing in 29 games with the squad during the regular season, he helped the team compete in the 75th annual National Baseball Congress World Series in Wichita, Kansas.

During the event, which drew 36 teams from around the country, Alonso helped the Glacier Pilots advance to the championship game before falling, 2-1, in an 11-inning affair.

On an individual level, Alonso earned a spot on the NBC World Series All-American team after piecing together an incredible performance in the team’s eight games. During the tournament, he led all players with a .565 batting average after roping 13 hits in 23 at bats. He also ranked third with a .607 on-base percentage.

Along with Cuneo and Alonso, several other members of the Blue Hen baseball team were selected to All-Star teams for their work over the summer. Michael Londino was named to the Atlantic Baseball Confederation Collegiate League All-Star team after serving as a top-flight pitcher for the Ocean Sports Academy Marlins.

In the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League, two Blue Hens earned a spot in the All-Star game after having successful seasons with the Quakertown Blazers. Corey Crispell and Matt Greco both earned a place on the Wolff Division squad. Crispell eventually finished the year tied for the league lead with six saves, while Greco ranked second on the team with 11 extra-base hits and third with five stolen bases.
