NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware baseball team will honor five of its alumni on Saturday morning during the team’s annual homecoming tailgate beginning at 9:30 a.m.

There is no cost for the event, which will be held at the tent in the corner of the football practice field closest to Bob Hannah Stadium. Food and beverages will be provided by UD Dining Services.

The homecoming tailgate caps off a weekend of events for the Blue Hen baseball program. On Friday, the squad is holding its annual golf outing at Patriots Glen. Over 100 of the program’s alumni and friends are participating in the outing.

At Saturday's tailgate, the members of the 2009-10 baseball team will introduce themselves, and alumni awards will be presented to five former Blue Hens. Keith Garagozzo, Chris Kolodzey, Scott Rambo, Andrew Salvo (at right), and Doug Shaab will all be honored during the festivities.

Garagozzo, who starred for the Blue Hens from 1989-91, compiled a 19-7 record with a 2.42 ERA during his three standout seasons at Delaware. During his final two years with the Hens, he led the team in wins and ERA.

In 1991, he garnered first-team All-American honors and went 9-2 with a 1.31 ERA and 109 strikeouts, which still stands as the third-highest total in a single-season in program history. After his junior year, he was selected by the New York Yankees in the ninth round of the 1991 Draft. He eventually appeared in seven games for the Minnesota Twins in 1994.

Kolodzey appeared in 197 games from 1998-01. During his four seasons, he posted a .332 batting average and 160 runs batted in. He still ranks among the top-20 all-time in career games, at bats, doubles, triples, RBI, and total bases.

In 2001, he led the Blue Hens with 12 home runs, 76 runs, and 62 RBI. He also knocked in a team-high 70 runs during his junior campaign in 2000, which stands as the sixth-highest total in program history. Following his career, he was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 25th round of the 2001 Major League Baseball Draft.

Rambo established himself as an outstanding pitcher in the CAA, finishing his four-year run with a 23-18 record to go along with 236 strikeouts. During three of his four seasons, he led the team in victories, including a stellar 7-2 record as a freshman in 2002.

He is currently tied for 10th all-time on the program’s career wins list, while he also ranks third all-time in strikeouts and fourth with 68 appearances. A captain on the 2005 squad, he helped the team reach the CAA Tournament three times, including a second-place finish in 2004.

Salvo finished his four-year career with a .370 lifetime batting average and led the team in hitting during each of his last two campaigns, including a .419 mark in 2000. He set a school record with six RBI and tied an NCAA mark with two home runs in one inning against Princeton on March 26, 2000.

In 2001, he also swiped a team-high 31 bases, which stands as the third most in a single season in program history. After his senior year, he was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 22nd round of the 2001 Major League Baseball Draft.

Shaab appeared in 41 games for the Blue Hens, helping anchor the Delaware rotation from 1980-83. During that time, he went 18-11 and posted a 3.80 ERA while striking out 157 batters.

As a junior in 1982, he led the team with 68 strikeouts. The following season, on March 16, 1983, he combined with three other Hens to toss the program’s first no-hitter in 40 years after blanking Villanova, 7-0. After his senior year, he was selected by the Houston Astros in the 25th round of the 1983 Major League Draft.
