SECAUCUS, N.J. – Michael Trout, the son of former University of Delaware All-American Jeff Trout (at right), was drafted in the first round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Tuesday evening.

Michael, a star outfielder for Millville High School in New Jersey, was selected by the Los Angeles Angels with the 25th overall pick in the draft. He was the second youngest selection in the first round, earning his spot in the draft less than two months before his 18th birthday.

He was the fifth centerfielder selected in this year’s draft and just the third high school outfielder.

During his prep career, Trout made quite a name for himself and quickly climbed up draft boards, especially after his incredible senior season. In 2009, the switch-hitting centerfielder earned New Jersey’s Gatorade Player of the Year Award as the top player in the state. He finished the year with a .531 batting average and set a new state record with 18 home runs.

As a dual threat during his junior year, Michael helped Millville win its conference title while hitting .530 with nine home runs and 35 RBI. On the mound, he also went 8-2 with a 1.77 ERA.

He eventually finished his stay at Millville with the school’s career record for batting average, hits, home runs, slugging percentage, and stolen bases.

The younger Trout is the second member of his family to join the professional ranks after his father was picked in the fifth round of the 1983 draft by the Minnesota Twins following an exceptional career as a Blue Hen.

Jeff Trout starred as a member of the Delaware baseball team from 1980-1983. During that stretch, he posted a .397 career batting average, which still ranks as the third highest in program history. He also stands fifth all-time with 206 runs scored, eighth with 256 hits, and 10th with 58 stolen bases.

During his senior campaign, he earned first-team All-American honors and was named the East Coast Conference Player of the Year. That season, he finished second in the nation and set a still-standing school record with a .519 batting average. He also broke Delaware single-season records with 98 hits and 86 runs scored.

Following his collegiate career, the elder Trout was drafted by the Twins and eventually spent four seasons in the Minnesota farm system. He hit .341 with eight homers at Single-A Wisconsin Rapids during his first professional stint before spending his final three seasons at Double-A Orlando.

Jeff Trout finished his minor league career with a .303 batting average and 22 home runs in 394 games.
