March 14, 2000 Mullin Bounces Back to Lift Hens to Victory
NEWARK, DE - Behind back-to-back triples from Bobby Fry and Casey Fahy, the University of Delaware defeated St. Joseph's University, 5-3 in baseball, Tuesday afternoon at Delaware Diamond. Delaware (5-5) got out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning. Fahy (Clayton, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) led off with a walk followed by a stolen base. Following his advancement to third base on a wild pitch, he scored on an Andrew Salvo (East Islip, NY/St. Anthony's) single. Next, Salvo stole second base, his first of two on the day. Then junior Peter Maestrales (Delray Beach, FL/Pope John Paul II) hit his third home run in four games which also drove in Salvo. Delaware held a 3-1 lead into the fifth when starter David Mullin (Swarthmore, PA/Ridley) walked Eric Wyatt, and allowed singles from Kevin Kirkby and Mike DeVincentis (Wyatt scored on DeVincentis' single). Next, Tim Gunn reached on a Maestrales error which allowed Kirkby to tie the score. Mullin battled out, getting Rob Reed to ground into a double play. For the day, the Delaware defense turned three twin kills. Delaware regained the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth when Salvo doubled to drive in Fahy, who reached on a single. Delaware added an insurance run in the seventh on back-to back triples from Fry and Fahy. Relief pitcher Brian Zeigler (Bear, DE/Caravel Academy) picked up his first save in his first appearance of the season. St Joseph's University is now 3-12 on the season. On the day, Fahy had three hits, Fry had two and Salvo had two including a double. Delaware will next take to the field on Wednesday afternoon as it travels to Villanova for a 3 p.m. start.
