William & Mary 23, Delaware 19
March 11, 2000

WILLIAMSBURG, VA -- In what could be considered the wildest game in Delaware's 110 seasons of baseball, William & Mary outlasted Delaware, 23-19, Saturday afternoon in baseball action at Plumeri Park.

The 42 runs combined were the most since Delaware and Maryland-Eastern Shore combined for 43 April 29, 1993 in a 38-5 Delaware win. The 19 runs were the most by a Delaware team since April 16, 1997. In addition, the 23 runs by the Tribe were the most allowed by a Delaware team in a regular season game since 1944.

The teams also combined for 42 hits, 21 for extra-bases, including 15 doubles and five home runs, nine errors and 11 walks in 3 hours, 42 minutes of baseball.

The Tribe (14-6) scored nine times in the bottom of the first with the first seven batters of the inning reaching base. Delaware starter Dave Mullin (1-2) was chased in the inning after Chris Clarke's two-run homer made it 9-0.

The Blue Hens climbed back in it, though. After each team put two runs up in the second, Delaware put three on the board in the third, thanks in part to Chris Kolodzey's two-run blast. However, William & Mary took a 17-5 lead with six more runs in the bottom of the third.

Delaware, however, countered with five in the fourth, one in the fifth, and three in the sixth, capped by Peter Maestrales' two-run homer to cut the deficit to 18-14 through 5-1/2 innings.

After Mike O'Kelly's two-run double in the bottom of the sixth gave the Tribe a 20-14 lead, Delaware went to work again, scoring four in the top of the seventh thanks in part to Kris Dufner's two-run double.

The Blue Hens came within one, 20-19, in the top of the eighth on Dufner's bases laded walk. However, the Tribe scored three more in the bottom half of the inning and Delaware could not mount a rally in the ninth.

Maestrales' homer was his second in as many days as he went 3 for 5 with four RBI.

The two teams conclude their three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m.
