WILMINGTON, Del.-Towson University set
an America East tournament record with 28 hits
as the third-seeded Tigers defeated
second-seeded University of Maine, 20-4, in the
first game of the America East Baseball
Championship at Daniel S. Frawley Stadium.
America East Player of the Year Gregg Davies
tied a tournament record with five hits and
drove in five runs to lead the Towson attack,
which also set a school record for hits in a
game. Each of the Tiger starters had at least
one hit and seven of the nine had multiple-hit
games.
Towson, 36-21, had 11 hits and scored nine
times off Maine starter Rusty Tucker, the
America East Pitcher of the Year, who entered
the game with a conference-leading 2.14 ERA. The
Tigers scored four times in the first inning off
Tucker, 7-2. Ryan Avila led off the game with a
home run to left field. Casey Stidham added a
two-run double and Joey Marcozzi's single plated
Stidham for a 4-0 lead before the Black Bears,
36-14, came to the plate.
Davies started a one-run rally in the third
inning when he led off with a single and later
scored on a single by Marcozzi, who had four
hits and three RBI.
The Tigers broke open the game in the fourth
inning when they chased Tucker. Tom Trela walked
to lead off the inning and scored on a double by
Avila. Davies followed with a two-run homer to
right field. A single by Scott Bacon ended
Tucker's day, but reliever Adam Labelle faired
no better. Stidham greeted Labelle with a single
and Mike Costello followed with an RBI single.
Marcozzi was hit by a pitch and Brian McKenna
plated a run with a sacrifice fly to center.
Trela then doubled down the left field line to
score two more and the Tigers led, 12-1.
At the same time, Towson starter Bryan
Simmering, who allowed eight hits in eight
innings while striking out eight and walking
two, was cruising. Simmering allowed a run in
the second inning when Alain Picard doubled and
advanced to third on a wild pitch. Pat Tobin's
sacrifice fly scored the Black Bears first run.
Maine threatened in the third when trailing
5-1, Mark Reichley walked with one out and Mike
Livulpi followed with a single. But Simmering
struck out Mattt Reynolds and Joe Drapeau and
the Tigers bats took over from there.
Towson advances to the winner's bracket of
the four-team, double-elimination tournament.
The Tigers meet the winner of tonight's
Delaware-Northeastern game Friday at 3:30 p.m.
Maine and the loser of the Delaware-Northeastern
game meet in an elimination game at 12 noon
Friday.
