WILMINGTON, Del.- Vic Sage had a
career-high 10 strikeouts to lead the
University of Delaware to a 4-1 win over
Towson University as the Blue Hens advanced
to Saturday's America East Championship game
for the fourth straight year. Sage, who was
the winning pitcher in the America East
Championship game in each of the past two
seasons, allowed seven hits and one run. The
right-hander, who improved to 10-2,
out-dueled Towson starter Matt Brady, who
allowed six hits and four runs, three of them
unearned in a one-hour, 49-minute affair.
Delaware, 43-13, plays the winner of
tonight's Towson-Northeastern game Saturday
at noon. The winner of tonight's game would
have to beat the Blue Hens twice on Saturday
to win the championship.
The Blue Hens broke a 1-1 tie with two
unearned runs in the sixth inning. Peter
Maestrales walked to lead off the inning and
Chris Kolodzey singled through the right side
to put runners at first and second with no
outs. Vince Vukovich executed a sacrifice
bunt to advance the runners. Brady, who fell
to 6-4, then induced a one-hop ground ball
back to the mound and appeared to have
Maestrales at the plate but catcher Casey
Stidham dropped the ball allowing the run to
score and Kolodzey to move up to third. Kris
Dufner then hit a sacrifice fly to left field
to plate Kolodzey for a 3-1 Blue Hens
lead.
Delaware added an insurance run in the
seventh inning when Steve Harden led off with
a solo home run over the left field wall.
Towson, 36-22, took a 1-0 lead in the
bottom of the third inning when Gregg Davies
delivered a two-out single to left field to
score Brian McKenna, who singled.
The Blue Hens tied it with an unearned run
in the top of the fifth inning when Teddy
Puitz led off the inning with a double and
advanced to third on a throwing error by the
left fielder. Andrew Salvo then delivered an
RBI with a sacrifice fly to left field.
