Joey
Marcozzi scored on Brian McKenna's
sacrifice fly in the sixth
inning.
|
WILMINGTON, Del.- Gregg Davies hit a
three-run homer as Towson University scored four
times in the sixth inning and held on to defeat
Northeastern University, 7-6, to advance to the
America East Championship game. The Tigers,
37-22, must defeat Delaware twice to earn the
conference crown.
Davies, the America East Player of the Year,
is now 7-for-14 in the tournament. Towson broke
open a 3-3 tie in the sixth when Joey Marcozzi
singled up the middle to lead off the inning,
stole second and advanced to third on a throwing
error by catcher Luke Carlin. Brian McKenna
delivered a sacrifice fly to right field to
score Marcozzi. Tom Trela and Ryan Avila then
hit back-to-back singles and after a flyout,
Davies hit a three-run homer over the 400-foot
sign in dead center field.
The Huskies, 19-32, battled back with single
runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings.
Carlin's two-out single in the seventh scored
Brad Czarnowski, who had doubled, to cut the
Towson lead to 7-4.
Ben Beck greeted Towson reliever Jason Walter
in the eighth inning with a 420-foot home run to
center field to make it 7-5. Walter had relieved
Towson starter and winner Bryan Rogers, 7-2, who
allowed eight hits and four runs while striking
out five and walking two in seven innings.
Hernan Guerrero led off the top of the ninth
inning with a single through the right side and
drove Walter, who allowed four hits and two runs
in an inning of work, from the game. Jason
Summerlin promptly delivered a wild pitch to
advance Guerrero to second base. Carlin singled
to right field to score Guerrero and the Huskies
trailed, 7-6. Coley O'Donnell singled to center
field to put runners at first and second with no
outs. Summerlin then got Beck to fly to center
with Carlin advancing to third with one out.
Designated hitter Jordan Thomson, who earlier in
the day had pitched eight innings in the
Huskies' 5-4 win over Maine, then grounded to
short to start a game-ending double play.
Northeastern had taken a 1-0 lead in the top
of the first inning when Guerrero led off the
game with a double, advanced to third on a wild
pitch and scored on a groundout by Beck.
The Tigers answered with two in the third.
McKenna doubled to right center to lead off the
inning and Tom Trela bunted for an infield hit.
Jimmy Kittelberger delivered a one-out RBI
single through the left side and Scott Bacon's
two-out single scored Trela.
Towson added a run in the fourth when Avila's
fielder's choice scored Marcozzi, who had also
reached on a fielder's choice.
Northeastern tied it in the fifth when
Czarnowski doubled to lead off the inning.
Guerrero followed with an RBI single through the
left side. Carlin singled to put runners at the
corners and O'Donnell delivered a sacrifice
fly.
Ken Henry, who allowed seven runs and 10 hits
in six innings, took the loss for the Huskies to
fall to 4-5.
Delaware and Towson will meet for the second
time in the tournament. The Blue Hens Vic Sage
pitched a complete-game seven-hiter as Delaware
advanced to the championship game with a 4-1 win
over the Tigers.
