University of Delaware baseball coach Bob Hannah, 67, completed his 36th and final season in 2000 with a remarkable career record of 1,053-464-6 after a 37-20 final campaign and another trip to the NCAA Regional Tournament.

Hannah announced in a news conference Sept. 21 that he will retire as head coach following the 2000 season.

The 1999 season saw Hannah become only the 22nd coach all-time to win 1,000 games and only the 14th active coach to reach the mark when he captured the milestone on April 18, 1999 against Hofstra 10-6. Among active coaches only 13 have a more victories than Hannah.

The 1999 season was one of the most memorable in Hannah's stellar career. Faced with a host of newcomers, the Hens started the season 1-11, the worst start in school history. But the Hens got hot quickly and finished the year with an impressive record of 35-25. The Hens' 19-9 mark in league play put them second in the America East standings. The Hens then moved on to their second straight America East title and fourth in five years, defeating top seed Towson twice on the final day to claim the crown. Delaware then headed to the NCAA Regionals where they lost to 10th ranked and top seeded Arkansas and to No. 2 seed Clemson.

In 1997 Hannah became only the 24th coach in Division I history (and just the 16th active coach) to record 900 wins. His .700 career winning percentage to start this season ranked seventh among active coaches and 23rd all time. Among Eastern coaches, only Virginia Tech's Chuck Hartman (1,200) has more wins than Hannah.

Hannah earned the highest honor of his illustrious career in January, 1991 when he was inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame during the annual ABCA convention in New Orleans.

Hannah has earned conference Coach of the Year honors nine times during his career, earning the award five times in the East Coast Conference in 1985, 1987, 1989, 1990, and 1991 and four times from the America East conference in 1992, 1995, 1996, and 1998. He has also been named the NCAA East District Coach of the Year five times, including the most recent honor in 1995.

The 1961 University of Delaware graduate has guided the Blue Hens into NCAA Regional play on 12 occasions, most recently in 1999, and led the Hens to their only College World Series appearance in 1970. He has guided the Hens to 21 regular season conference titles, including America East crowns in 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997 and 1998. The Hens have won 11 overall league tournament titles - two in the Middle Atlantic Conference (1970, 1974), four in the East Coast Conference (1979, 1980, 1982, 1983), and five in America East (1992, 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999).

The Hens have had just two losing seasons in Hannah's 36-year reign, having reeled off eight straight 30-win seasons from 1976 to 1983 while adding 30-win seasons in 1985, 1988, 1991 and 1992. Four of the last five seasons have seen the Hens break the 40-win barrier, posting 41, 45, 44, 45 and 43 wins consecutively. Delaware has won 30 games or more in 18 of the last 24 years. Hannah has led his teams to an incredible record of 350-94 in conference (Middle Atlantic, East Coast Conference, and America East) regular season games, a winning percentage of .789.

Hannah resides in Newark with his wife, June. They have two children: Heather, a University of Delaware graduate, and Bruce, a former Blue Hen standout first baseman who served as an assistant coach for Delaware in 1994-97.
