Delaware Baseball Loses Opener 6-5 to Coastal
Carolina
CONWAY, SC -- The University of Delaware baseball
team opened the season on Thursday with 6-5 loss to Coastal
Carolina who improved to 8-2 on the season.
Coastal Carolina was led by Justin Owens who went 3 for
4, with a double and 3 RBI. The Chanticleers pitching staff
held All- American outfielder Kevin Mench to only one
hit while striking Mench out three times. Coastal Carolina
starting pitcher Rett Johnson pitched six strong innings
allowing only three runs and striking out seven while
walking one.
Delaware jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when junior
college transfer Peter Maestrales singled, stole
second, and scored on Chris Kolodzey base hit. The
Hens did not hold on to the lead for long as Coastal
Carolina scored two in the bottom half of the first. Coastal
Carolina added two more in third when Owens singled in two
to make the score 4-1. The lead grew to 6-1 when Jon Humay
had a RBI single and Brooks Marzka hit a sacrifice fly.
Delaware started to rally in the fifth when Maestrales
hit his first homer as Blue Hen to make the score 6-3.
Reliever Bryan Porcelli pitched four scoreless
innings to keep the Hens in the game. The Hens made a
two-out rally in the ninth started by a Coastal Carolina
error followed by three hits including a RBI double by
Kolodzey which cut the lead to 6-5. The rally ended when
Jamie McSherry popped out to end the game.
Starter Dave Mullin (0-1) took the loss for the
Hens.
Delaware faces Coastal Carolina again on Friday at 1
p.m.
