CLEMSON KNOCKS UD NINE OUT OF NCAA REGIONALS,
17-3
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The 1999 season came to
an end for the University of Delaware baseball team Saturday
afternoon as No. 2 Clemson erupted for 18 hits and scored
seven runs in the sixth to post a 17-3 victory in the second
round of the NCAA Regionals at the University of
Arkansas Baum Stadium.
The Tigers (38-25) , who were upset 23-5 by No. 3
Southwest Missouri State Friday, advance to Saturdays
third game vs. either Arkansas or Southwest Missouri. The
Blue Hens, who completed a remarkable season in which they
won the America East title despite the starting the season
1-11, finished the year at 35-25. The game marked Delaware
second straight trip to the NCAA Regionals.
The Hens lost in the opening round of the tournament
Friday night, falling to top seed No. 1 seed and 10th ranked
Aransas, 10-6.
Ryan Mottl (4-7) picked up the first complete game by any
Clemon pitcher this season as he scattered nine hits, walked
two, and struck out five in posting the wins. The Hens used
four pitchers with freshman starter Rich McGuire
(7-4) taking the loss after allowing six hits and four
earned runs in three innings.¨
Third baseman Khali Greene went 3 for 4 with three RBI,
first baseman Jason Harris was 3 for 4 and scored four runs,
and leftfielder Casey Stone went 3 for 6 with two RBI to
pace the Clemson attack.
Senior first baseman Ken Giles led the Delaware
attack, knocking in two runs on a third inning groundout and
a solo home run to lead off the sixth inning, his eight of
the season. Senior third baseman Frank DiMaggio
accounted for the other Blue Hen run with a solo home run,
his eighth of the season, leading off the ninth inning.
Senior designated hitter Matt Voltz had two hits for
the Blue Hens.
I pay tribute to Clemson today, said Delaware
head coach Bob Hannah, who won his 1,000th career
game earlier this season, his 35th with the Blue Hens.
They had a tough day yesterday and got beat up by
Southwest Missouri, but they came back and beat us in every
phase of the game.
It was a rough day today, said Delaware
catcher and team captain Jamie McSherry, who batted
.247 and missed just one start all season behind the plate.
Overall it was a great season, turning things around
from our (1-11) start. It was great to be a part of this
team and playing in the NCAA Tournament made it even
better.
