UD Baseball splits America East doubleheader with
Drexel
NEWARK, DE -- Rich McGuire remained undefeated on
the season at 3-0, and pitched his third complete game in as
many starts as the Delaware baseball (14-13, 5-1) team
salvaged a split in its doubleheader with Drexel (9-16,
4-2). Delaware lost the first game 7-1 and won the second
game 7-3 on Saturday at the Delaware Diamond.
In the first game Delaware starter Dave Mullin
carried a shutoutand an 18 inning scoreless streak into the
seventh inning against the Dragons. However, the Dragons got
seven runs in the inning on an RBI double by Matt Neiber, a
Renaldo Smith RBI single, a two base error by Mullin that
scored two, a Ryan Lucas 2 RBI double and Jose Jimenez RBI
single to put them ahead 7©1 which held up as the final
score. Drexel starter Michael Sheehan pitched a complete
game allowing only four hits and one run in seven
innings.
In the second game McGuire pitched four and two thirds
innings of
perfect baseball and only gave up one hit in the first
six innings as Delaware cruised to a 7-3 victory. McGuire,
who gave up tworuns in the seventh inning, had pitched 21
consecutive innings without giving up an earned run before
giving the runs up in the seventh. Kevin Mench went
2-3 with in the game with four RBI and hit his eighth home
run of the season for the Hens.
Delaware was led by McGuire who is now 3-0 and has
pitched a complete game in every one of his starts. McGuire
went seven innings giving up five hits and two earned runs.
Mench was three for six on the day and knocked in four of
Delaware's eight runs in the double header.
Drexel was led by Sheehan who moved to 3-0 on the season
picking up a complete game victory in the first end of the
doubleheader. Gregg Mellott went 3©7 on the day with a
run and paced the Dragons in their win with a 3-4
performance in the first game.
Delaware will be in action on Sunday as the Hens take on
Drexel ina doubleheader that will start at 12 noon at the
Delaware Diamond.
