¡UD Baseball splits weekend series with Drexel

NEWARK, DE -- Kevin Mench went two for four in the first game including a grand slam and five RBI to lead the Delaware baseball team (15-14, 6-2) to a 10-4 victory in the first game of a rescheduled doubleheader at the Delaware Diamond on Monday. However, the Dragons took advantage of 12 Hens walks in the second gameto win 14-4 and splitthe weekend series with the Blue Hens.

In the first game Drexel jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and was tied with Delaware 3-3 in the fourth inning until Mench unloaded a grand slam to lead the Hens to a six run inning to blow the game open. Bryan Porcelli pitched his second straight complete game and allowed seven hits, four runs and struck out eight in the victory.

In the second game Tim Lorito could not find the plate as he walkedfive batters and gave up seven runs in one and one thirds innings as the Hens endured a six run Dragon second inning and a five run Dragon third inning. Delaware had five pitchers go to the mound in the second game including shortstop Peter Maestrales who had his second outing of the year and pitched a perfect two thirds of aninning.

Delaware was led by Mench, who now has 22 RBI in his last 10 games,and went three for seven in the doubleheader with six RBI and a homerun. Chris Kolodzey extended his hitting streak to nine games as he continued his recent hot hitting. Porcelli, who came into last week as the America East's strikeout leader, had eightstrikeouts in a complete game victory. Catcher Jamie McSherry went two for two with a home run and a double in the second game. Delaware head coach Bob Hannah, who won his 996th game, is now fourvictories short of being only the 22nd coach in NCAA Division I history to win 1,000 career games.

Drexel was led by Bruce Boehm who went three for three in thesecond game with a single, a double and a homer, along with four RBI to help pace his team to 14 runs in the second game. Ryan Higgins pitched a complete game allowing four runs on six hits andstriking out six in his first career start to pick up his firstcollegiate victory.

Delaware will be in action on Wednesday as the travel down to UMBCto take on the Retrievers at 3 p.m. in Catonsville, Md
