UD baseball sweeps weekend series from
Hartford
Hartford, Conn. -- Rich McGuire pitched a complete
game shutout in the front end of the doubleheader and t hen
started and went went two and one thirds innings without
giving up an earned run in the second game as Delaware
(27-17, 16-4) swept the doubleheader and weekend series from
Hartford (10-28, 5-15) 2-0 in the first game and 3-2 in the
second game on Sunday afternoon at Ray McKenna Field.
In the first game McGuire pitched to 23 batters, only two
over the minimum, as he pitched a complete game giving up
only three hits and picked up the victory to move his record
to 6-1 on the year. Jamie McSherry provided the Hens
only two runs on a two RBI single in the fourth inning with
the bases loaded.
In the second game the Hawks would see McGuire again as
he started and went two and a thirds innings giving up one
unearned run and three hits. Tim Lorito came in and
pitched four and one third innings and only gave up one run
to pick up the win in relief, while Vic Sage came in
with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to strike out
pinch hitter Dan Winnick with the bases loaded and pick up
his second save of the season. Andrew Salvo had an
RBI double in the fourth followed by a Frank DiMaggio
RBI single to put the Hens up 2-1, and Kevin Mench
had sacrifice fly to drive in what would prove to be a
crucial insurance run in the fifth inning.
Delaware was led by McGuire who started both ends of the
doubleheader logging nine and one third innings on the day
and only allowing one unearned run and six hits. Offensively
the Hens were led by Salvo who went three for seven with two
runs and an RBI and McSherry who went three for seven and
drove in two runs. Mench continued his conference streak
reaching base in both games of the twin bill today. He has
now reached base in all 20 America East games this season.
Lorito moved to 3-4 on the year picking up a win in relief
for the Hens.
Hartford got good outings from both starting pitchers
with Brandon Handfield pitching six innings and only giving
up two runs in the first loss and Todd Wheeler pitching five
and one thirds innings and giving up two earned runs in the
second game.
Delaware will be in action on Tuesday when the Hens host
UMBC in the Delaware Diamond at 3 p.m.
