UD Baseball Moves Hannah One Win Away From 1,000

NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware baseball team (18-14, 8-2) swept a doubleheader from Hofstra (13-9, 3-7) 11-5 and 11-1 to move head coach Bob Hannah one win away from winning his 1,000th career victory.

Hannah, who came into the four game series with Hofstra needing just three more victories to get his 1,000th career win, will try to get the victory tommorrow in a doubleheader against the Flying Dutchmen to become only the 22nd head coach in NCAA Division I history to accomplish the feat.

In the first game Delaware fell behind 4-2 in the first inning when Hofstra's Matt Bofalo and Dave Lohman hit a pair of two run home runs to put the Flying Dutchmen ahead. Delaware struck back with a five run second inning highlighted by a Jamie McSherry two-run homerun and Kevin Mench's three-run home run, his 10th of the season. Starter Dave Mullin settled down and went the distance giving up five runs and seven hits over seven innings to pick up his fifth win of the season.

In the second game the Blue Hens gave starting pitcher Bryan Porcelli unneeded run support by knocking in 11 runs for the second game in a row. Porcelli pitched brilliant only giving up one run and five hits, while striking out a season-high 10 batters enroute to a complete game victory. Delaware led 5-1 going into the sixth inning, but broke the game open with five runs courtesy of two RBI from Chris Kolodzey, and RBI from Mench, Andrew Salvo and Matt Voltz.

Delaware was led offensively by Ken Giles, who was 6-7 and scored five runs on the day for the Hens. Mench led Delaware in RBI with five on the day, while McSherry and Frank DiMaggio had three. Porcelli and Mullin both tied for the team lead in wins with five and both pitched complete games. Porcelli, who pitched his third straight complete game, added on to his America East strikeout lead with 10 strikeouts on the day.

Hofstra was led by Boffalo and Lohman who both had two run home runs in the first game. Head coach Bob Hannah will go for win No. 1,000 tommorrow as the Hens take on Hofstra in a twin bill that will start at 12 noon tomorrow in Hempstead, N.Y.
