Baseball Splits with Hofstra; Hannah Wins
1,000th
HEMPSTEAD, NY -- University of Delaware head
baseball coach Bob Hannah became just the 22nd coach
in college baseball history to record 1,000 victories as the
Blue Hens split an America East doubleheader with Hofstra
Sunday afternoon at University Field.
Delaware (19-15, 9-3 America East), which leads the
America East standings, lost the first game 12-2 before
coming back to capture the nightcap 10-6, giving Hannah the
milestone victory. Hofstra moved its record to 14-10,
4-8.
Hannah, who began his head coaching career at Delaware in
1965, moved his career record to 1,000-434-6 in his 36th
season. He becomes just the 22nd coach in college baseball
history and just the 14th active coach to reach the
milestone.
"Certainly this is a great honor and I'm proud that we
were able to accomplish it with this group of kids," said
Hannah, a member of the American Baseball Coaches
Association Hall of Fame who has led his teams to five
straight 40-win seasons. "This group has overcome some
adversity and I'm proud that we've been able to bounce back
from a rough start (1-11)."
"I'm proud to be part of such a memorable event," said
Delaware senior catcher and captain Jamie McSherry.
"This is probably the most memorable thing that I have ever
been a part of in baseball. We have a lot of respect for
Coach Hannah and we are all very happy for him."
Hofstra won the opener 12-2, scoring eight runs in the
first two innings off starter Rich McGuire (4-1), who
entered the game with a team-leading earned run average of
2.40. The Flying Dutchmen banged out 14 hits against three
Delaware pitchers. Hofstra first baseman Vincent Michello
went 3 for 4 with three RBI, including a home run. Tony
Lofink and Brian Weingart each had RBI for
Delaware.
In the nightcap, the Hens overcame an early 6-2 deficit
by scoring four runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth
on the way to the 10-6 win. The Hens banged out 14 hits and
took advantage of four Flying Dutchmen errors.
Ryan Preziosi hit a home run for the Blue Hens,
who also got three hits from third baseman Frank
DiMaggio and two RBI from first baseman Ken Giles.
Vic Sage (3-2) picked up the win, pitching three innings
of relief for starter Peter Maestrales, who was
touched for four runs in two-thirds of an inning. Jeff
Romond picked up his second save of the season for the
Hens.
The Hens continue action Tuesday at Temple
University.
