UD Baseball losses in First Round in Liberty Bell
Classic
PHILADELPHIA, PA -- The University of Delaware baseball
team (9-12)
had an eight game winning streak snapped as the Hens lost
to St.
Joseph's (12-13-1) 10-9 in the first round of the Liberty
Bell
Classic. The loss marked the first time since the
inception of the
tournament in 1992 that Delaware had not made the finals
of the Liberty Bell Classic.
St. Joseph's held Delaware at bay taking leads of 1-0,
3-1 and 5-3
before the Hens broke through in the seventh with a
three-run
inning highlighted by a Kevin Mench two RBI double
which gave
Delaware the lead. The Blue Hens went in to the bottom of
the
ninth inning up 9-5 after adding three more insurance
runs. Jeff
Romond who pitched six innings walked the first
three batters of
the inning to load the bases with no outs. With Delaware
starting
conference play on Friday they called on starting
shortstop Peter Maestrales
to complete the pitching duties, but he gave up a two RBI
double to
Pace Bradshaw and then a game-winning three-run home run
to Justin
Godusky to end the game.
Delaware was led by Mench who had two RBI. Six other Blue
Hen
players knocked in one RBI. Vince Vukovich was
three for five with
one RBI and one run. Vinnie Keaser got the start
and pitched two
innings and gave up two runs. Romond came in and pitched
six
innings and gave up six runs on seven hits and seven
walks.
Maestrales took the loss giving up two runs in no innings
pitched.
Delaware pitching gave up 12 walks for the game.
St. Joseph's was led by Godusky who went two for four
with four RBI
and the game-winning home run. Jim Boylan got the victory
pitching
the ninth and giving up one run.
Delaware will open up conference play on Friday April 2
at 12 noonas the Hens take on the Vermont Catamounts at the
Delaware Diamond.
