UD Baseball Splits doubleheader with Maine
ORONO, ME -- Kevin Mench homered twice on the day,
including once in the top of the sixth inning in the second
game to put the Blue Hens up for good as Delaware (29-18,
17-5) split a double header with Maine (24-22, 11-11) losing
4-3 in the first game and winning 3-2 in the second game
tonight at Mahaney Diamond in Orono, Maine.
With the combination of two Drexel loses earlier today
and Delaware's one win tonight the Blue Hens clinched a
berth in the upcoming America East tournament May 20-22 at
Frawley Field in Wilmington, Delaware.
In the first game Maine scored two runs on a sacrifice
bunt in the bottom of seventh to give the Black Bears the
win when Delaware first baseman Ken Giles committed
an error which scored Bryan Harvie and Kregg Jarvais.
Delaware jumped in front of the Black Bears in the first
inning on a two-run home run by Kevin Mench. Delaware
led 3-1 before Brian Poire homered to make the scored 3-2 in
the fifth. Kris Ehmke picked up a complete game victory for
the Black Bears, while Dave Mullin took the loss for
Delaware.
In the second game Delaware trailed 2-0 going into the
sixth inning, but rallied courtesy of a Ryan Preziosi
home run and then a two-run home run by Mench, which
gave the Hens the lead for good. Delaware starter Bryan
Porcelli moved to 6-0 in conference play picking up the
complete game victory, while Rusty Tucker took the loss for
the Black Bears.
Delaware was led offensively by Mench, who had two home
runs and four RBI on the day and has now reached base in 28
straight games and in all 22 America East contests. Chris
Kolodzey and Andrew Salvo both went three for
seven on the day for the Hens. Dave Mullin lost only
his second conference contest of the season in the first
game going six innings and giving up seven hits and four
runs to drop to 7-5 on the season. Porcelli, who has not
lost since March 13, went seven innings giving up five hits,
two runs and one unearned run to move to 8-2 on the
season.
Maine was led offensively by Julian Bracali who went five
for six on the day with an RBI. Ehmke got the win in the
first game for Maine going seven innings and giving up six
hits and three runs.
Delaware will be in action on Sunday when the Hens take
on Maine in a doubleheader at 11 a.m. at Mahaney
Diamond.
