UD Splits Four©Game Series with Maine
ORONO, ME -- The University of Delaware baseball team
(30-19, 18-6) won its 30th game of the season when the Blue
Hens defeated Maine (25-23, 12-12) 17-3 in the second game
of Sunday's doubleheader, to mark the eighth season in the
decade of the nineties and the 17th in the last 23 years
that the Hens have won 30 games or more in a season, in a
doubleheader split against Maine on Sunday afternoon at
Mahaney Diamond. The Black Bears won the first game of the
doubleheader 7-2.
In the first game Maine jumped on Delaware early scoring
one run in each of the first two innings on RBI by Julian
Bracali and Brett Ouelette. Delaware tied the game at two in
the fourth inning on RBI singles by Ryan Preziosi and
Brian Weingart, but Maine answered back with three
runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to pull away.
Delaware committed three errors on the game including one
error and a passed ball in the fifth which accounted for two
of the Black Bear's runs in that inning. Jim Bailin picked
up the win for Maine to move to 6-2, while Rich
McGuire suffered only his second loss of the season to
move to 6-2 on the season.
In the second game Delaware scored in all but two innings
and scored eight runs in the second inning as the Hens gave
starter Tim Lorito 17 runs of support to work with.
Ken Giles led the attack with a home run and four RBI
and Kevin Mench reached base in all five plate
appearances, while Lorito pitched all seven innings and gave
up only one earned run to move to 4-4 on the season. Rob
Worcester moved to 3-5 on the season as he gave up eight
runs in one and two thirds innings.
Delaware was led offensively by Mench and Giles on the
day. Giles had a home run and four RBI, while Mench, who has
now reached base safely in 30 straight games and in all 24
conference games, had three doubles, two RBI and reached
base in seven out of nine plate appearances on the day. The
Blue Hens also got a great deal of production from the
designated hitter spot as Weingart went three for three with
one RBI in the first game and Matt Voltz went four
for five with three runs and three RBI in the second game.
Delaware's pitching was led by Lorito who pitched his first
complete game of his collegiate career giving up only two
runs in the game. McGuire picked up his second loss of the
season giving up 11 hits and seven runs, five of which were
unearned.
Maine was led by Brian Poire who went five for eight with
three runs on the day. Jim Bailin led the pitching giving up
only two runs in the complete game victory in game one.
Delaware will be in action next Saturday when the Hens
play host to Northeastern in a conference doubleheader at 12
noon at the Delaware Diamond.
