DiMaggio Leads UD Baseball to 14-5 Win over G. Mason

FAIRFAX, VA -- Senior third baseman Frank DiMaggio knocked in four runs, including a three-run blast in the ninth inning, and Vince Vukovich and Peter Maestrales each knocked in two runs as the University of Delaware baseball team won its eighth straight game Tuesday with a 14-5 win over host George Mason at Spuhler Field.

The Blue Hens (9-11) overcame an early 4-0 deficit with a five-run third inning and led the rest of the way for the victory. George Mason, which got three hits from catcher Scott Yeager and Trevor Haas, fell to 12-10-1. The game featured 12 errors, including seven by the host Patriots. George Mason allowed 11 unearned runs.

George Mason scored two runs each in the first and second off starter Bryan Porcelli but it was all Delaware after that.

The Hens exploded for five runs in the third on run-scoring doubles by Vukovich, Kevin Mench, and Matt Voltz. Delaware added two runs in the sixth on RBI by Vukovich and Maestrales and added three in the seventh and four in the ninth, including DiMaggio's shot, his first home run of the season. Mench collected three hits on the day while Maestrales, Voltz, Andrew Salvo, and Ken Giles each added two in the 13-hit assault. The win gave Delaware head coach Bob Hannah 990 for his career.

Tim Lorito (1-2) picked up the win in relief of Porcelli, allowing just four hits and one run in five innings for the Hens. Marcus Davis (1-1) took the loss for the Patriots.

Delaware returns to action tonight (Wednesday) at 7 p.m. when the Hens take on St. Joseph's in the first round of the Liberty Bell Classic at Veteran's Stadium in Philadelphia.
