May 20, 1999, Wilmington, DE
Delaware 7, Northeastern 3

WILMINGTON, DE -- Defending champion and No. 2 seed Delaware opened up America East Baseball Tournament play with a 7-3 victory over No. 3 seed Northeastern Thursday night at Frawley Stadium.

The Blue Hens (32-22), who had lost three out of four to the Huskies (28-20) last weekend, advance to Friday's winners bracket game vs. No. 1 seed Towson (32-17) at 3:30 p.m. Northeastern will face No. 4 seed Maine (27-27) in the loser's bracket game at 12 noon. Towson defeated the Black Bears 6-1 in Thursday's first round game.

Delaware got to America East Pitcher of the Year Greg Montalbano (8-2) for five runs in the fourth inning on the way to the win. Delaware lefthander Bryan Porcelli scattered 11 hits to win his 10th straight game to improve to 10-2. Porcelli, himself a first team All-America East selection, walked just one and struck out five.

The Hens sent nine batters to the plate in the fifth, all singles, to knock out Montalbano. Successive RBI singles by Brian Weingart and Ryan Preziosi followed by a two-run single by Andrew Salvo and a sacrifice fly by Kevin Mench gave the Hens all the runs they would need.

Delaware banged out 13 hits as Salve was 3 for 5 with two RBI, Ken Giles (7 for 7 vs. Montalbano) was 3 for 4 and scored two runs, and Chris Kolodzey and Frank DiMaggio each collected two hits.

Michael Lomuscio knocked in two runs for Northeastern while Jason Lewis and Hector Guerrero each had three hits in a 11-hit attack.
