UD Baseball Splits with Northeastern

NEWARK, DE-- On a day in which Delaware (31-20, 19-7) honored its seniors and its head coach it was Matt Voltz and Jamie McSherry two seniors who combined to help Delaware win game two of Saturday's doubleheader 3-2 over Northeastern (26-19, 16-10) to keep Delaware at 19-7 one half game ahead of second placeTowson who won both games today to move to 18-7 in America East play. The win allowed the Blue Hensto split the doubleheader after losing 12-6 to the Huskies in the first game on Saturday afternoon at the Delaware Diamond.

Delaware jumped on the board in the second inning of game two when Frank DiMaggio drove in Kevin Mench on an RBI groundout. Northeastern and Delaware exchanged runs in the fourth and the Huskies tied the game at two in the sixth on a Ben Beck's RBI single. McSherry walked to lead off the seventh inning and came around to score on a game-winning RBI by Voltz to win the game. Bryan Porcelli got the win moving to 9-2 on the season, while Jason Gillespie moved to 5-1 picking up his first loss of the season.

In the first game Delaware was faced with the vaunted task of hitting against Husky ace Greg Montalbano who came into the game with a 7-1 record and a NCAA leading 0.68 ERA. The Blue Hens did not help their cause early committing two errors in the first three innings, while Ben Beck had RBI in the first and the third to give Northeastern a 5-1 lead after three innings. Delaware scrapped together one run in the fourth on an RBI double by Peter Maestrales and two in the sixth off a two RBI single from Jamie McSherry to cut the lead to 5-4 in the fifth. Delaware trailed 6-4 going into the top of the seventh inning but Northeastern blew the game open with six runs. Delaware got two runs in the bottom of the inning on a Ryan Preziosi home run, but could not muster a comeback. Montalbano moved to 8-1 on the season, but gave up more earned runs in today's outing with six earned runs than the four he had givenup in the whole season coming into the game. Tim Lorito took the loss to move to 4-5 on the season.

Delaware was led by Bryan Porcelli who pitched seven innings giving up seven hits and only two runs as he ended the conference regular season at 7-0 beating every team in the America East once this season. The Blue Hens offense was led by Kevin Mench who was 3-8 with one run and one RBI. Mench has now reached base in 32 straight games and in all 26 America East games. Ken Giles also had a big day going 4-4 off Montalbano and 5-7 on the day, whileMcSherry was two for six with the game-winning run in the second game.

Northeastern was led offensively by Henan Guerrero who was 4-7 withtwo runs and by Ben Beck 2-5 with three RBI.

Delaware will be in action on Sunday at 11 a.m. when the Blue Hens take on Northeastern in a doubleheader at the Delaware Diamond. If Delaware wins both games or the same amount of games as Towson tommorow the Hens will clinch their sixth America East regular season title in a row.
