UD Baseball drops doubleheader to Northeastern

NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware baseball team lost a four-game series in America East play for the first time since May 7-8, 1993 against Maine, and absorbed its first conference doubleheader sweep since April 5, 1996 against Hofstra as Northeastern swept the Hens 4-2 and 3-1 on Sunday at the Delaware Diamond.

The two losses combined with a Towson win in game one of its doubleheader with Drexel broke Delaware's string of five straight regular season conference titles and made Delaware the No. 2 seed in this weeks America East tournament where the Hens will face the No. 3 seed Northeastern on Thursday at 8 p.m. at Frawley Stadium in Wilmington, Delaware.

In the first game Delaware jumped ahead of Northeastern 2-0 in the first inning on a Kevin Mench two-run home run. However, Todd Korchin answered with a two-run home run to tie the game in the fourth inning and the Huskies took the lead in the fifth 4-2 on RBI singles from Kevin Kim and Ben Beck. John Burns shut down the Blue Hens after the first inning going the distance and giving up six hits and two runs to pick up the win. Dave Mullin picked up his second loss in a row to drop to 7-6 on the season.

In the second game Chris Walsh limited the Blue Hens to four hits and one run as the Huskies used a pair of fielder's choice RBI and an infield bunt RBI to beat Delaware 3-1. Mike Lomuscio reached on three infield hits providing one run and one RBI for the Huskies. Rich McGuire scattered 11 hits over seven innings and gave up three runs picking up his second loss in a row to move to 6-3.

Delaware was led by Kevin Mench and Frank DiMaggio on offense who both hit home runs to provide the Blue Hens only runs in both games. McGuire allowed three runs to pick up the loss, while Mullin gave up four runs on nine hits to pick up a loss in the first game. Northeastern held the Blue Hens offense to only three runs on the day.

Delaware will begin the double elimination America East Tournament play on Thursday as the No. 2 seed Blue Hens will take on the No. 3 seed Northeastern Huskies at 8 p.m. at Frawley Stadium in Wilmington, Delaware. In the other first round game the No. 1 seed Towson Tigers will take on the No. 4 seed Maine Black Bears at 4:30 p.m.
