UD Baseball team sweeps doubleheader from

NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware baseball team (7-11) fought through a day of good pitching and clutch hitting to win its fifth and sixth straight games and sweep a doubleheader from Princeton (3-10) on Saturday at the Delaware Diamond. Delaware won 2-1 in the first game and 1-0 in the second with both wins coming in the Hens final at bat.

In the first game Princeton jumped ahead in the second inning on an RBI ground out by Ryan Acheteberg which plated Max Krance to take a 1-0 lead. Delaware struck back in the bottom of the third on an RBI double by Peter Maestrales to score Andrew Salvo. Dave Mullin,who pitched his second straight complete game, and Tim Killgoer of Princeton waged a pitchers duel for the rest of the game. In the seventh inning reliever Jeff Golden came in with runners on first and third and gave up the game winning hit to Kevin Mench with two outs.

In the second game Delaware pitcher Rich McGuire, who made his first collegiate start, and Princeton hurler Jason Quintana engaged in pitchers duel. McGuire pitched a complete game shutout, while Quintana retired 15 straight Delaware hitters until the bottom of the seventh. With two outs in the seventh Chris Kolodzey got a base hit and Frank DiMaggio followed with a bunt single which advanced Kolodzey to third. First baseman Ken Giles delivered a two-out base hit to plate Kolodzey as the Hens won in their last at bat for the second time in the doubleheader.

Delaware was led by Mullin and McGuire who strung together two stellar complete game pitching performances. McGuire struck out six and only allowed four hits in seven innings to knotch a complete game shutout in his first collegiate start for Delaware, while Mullin pitched his second straight complete game giving up only one run in seven innings of work. Delaware pitchers have now given up two runs or less in seven out of the last eight games. Mench was 3-7 with one RBI on the day which won the first end of the doubleheader, while Giles went 2-6 on the day with one RBI which won the second game of the doubleheader. Salvo was 2-6 and scored two out of the Hens three runs on the day. Quintana highlighted the day for the Tigers by baffling the Hens for most of the second game retiring 15 batters in a row and pitching 6 2/3 innings and only giving up one run.

Delaware will be in action next on Sunday against Wilmington College. The starting time which was originally scheduled to be 12 noon has been changed to 1 p.m. at the Delaware Diamond.
