Providence Sweeps Three Games from UD Baseball
NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware baseball
team (1-11) dropped all three games to Providence (13-3)
this weekend, including both ends of a twin bill Saturday,
by scores of 2-1 and 18-6.
In the first game Bryan Porcelli (0-2) gave
Delaware its first complete game of the season, but was
outdueled by Providence's Marc DesRosches who also
pitched a complete game and gave up only one run.
All-American Kevin Mench had Delaware's only RBI
when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the
first innings. After Mench drove in the RBI, Providence
worked its way out of a base loaded jam.
The game was tied at 1-1 until the sixth inning when
Angelo Ciminiello had an RBI double to plate Jeremy Sweet.
Freshman leftfielder Vince Vukovich went 3 for 3 for
Delaware while Sweet had two doubles for the Friars.
In the second game the Hens saw an early 1-0 lead off a
first inning home run by Andrew Salvo, his first of
the season, turn into an rout as Providence scored runs in
seven of the nine innings and faced five different pitchers
on the day.
Delaware starter Tim Lorito (0-2) was chased in
the fourth inning as he gave up six runs which would set the
tone for a game in which the Hens gave 20 hits and 18 runs.
For Delaware, which is enduring its worst 12-game start
in school history dating back to 1882, Vukovich
highlighted the weekend, bringing a streak of six straight
hits into the second game of the doubleheader after going
three for three in the first game of the doubleheader. He
went 2 for 5 with two RBI while Salvo and Ken Giles
each had two hits.
Porcelli had the Hens' best pitching outing of the
season, pitching a seven-inning complete game and only
giving up two earned runs.
Providence was led offensively by Keith Reed and Jamie
Athas who both had five RBI in the second game, while
DesRoches pitched a complete game.
Delaware will be in action next on Tuesday at 3 p.m. at
the Delaware Diamond local foe St. Joseph's.
