UD Baseball Falls Victim to ninth innning rally at
Richmond
RICHMOND, VA -- The University of Delaware Baseball team
(1-4) fell victim to a ninth inning rally against Richmond
(5-4) 14-11, on a day that saw the two teams limited to only
one game instead of the originally scheduled double
header.
Delaware scored runs in each of the first three innings,
but was trailing 7-5 going into the fourth inning after a
three run bottom of the third by the Spiders. The Blue Hens
trailed 10-8 going into the top of the eighth until Kevin
Mench delivered a two-out RBI single to tie the game,
shortstop Peter Maestrales scored on a wild pitch by
Richmond reliever Bobby Basham to give Delaware an 11-10
lead that it took into the bottom of the ninth inning.
Richmond tied the score on designated hitter Ryan Martin's
RBI single, and won on second baseman Nate Rewers three-run
homerun with one out in the ninth. Delaware was led by
Mench, Chris Kolodzey and Frank DiMaggio who
all had two RBI, while Ken Giles hit the Hens only homerun
and scored three runs. Mench, who had struggled in the first
four games of the season before hitting a homerun in the
last game, went two for two from the plate, scored two runs
and walked three times. Jeff Romond got the loss
giving up four runs in 2 1/3 innings, while Vic Sage
gave up two earned runs in 3 2/3 innings. Bryan
Porcelli started and gave up seven runs in 2 1/3
innings. The three Delaware pitchers did combine for 14
strikeouts on the day.
Richmond was led by second baseman Nate Rewers, who had
four RBI and two homeruns, including the game-winner in the
ninth inning. Starter Casey Burns, who pitched a complete
game shutout against the Hens last week down in South
Caroline, pitched six innings and gave five runs, including
two earned runs.
Delaware will back in action tommorow when they play at
Richmond in a doubleheader which will start at 12 p.m. in an
effort to make up for the game that was rained out
today.
