UD Baseball Loses Doubleheader to Richmond

RICHMOND, VA -- The University of Delaware baseball team (1-6) dropped its third and fourth games this season to Richmond (7-4), losing 11-2 in the first game and 12-1 in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader played on Sunday.

In the first game, the Hens trailed 4-2 going into the fifth inning until the flood gates opened with the Spiders scoring two runs in the fifth and five runs in the bottom of the sixth highlighted by Nate Rewers third homer un in the last two games.

Richmond got six innings from starter Mike Dwyer who gave up two runs on two hits and struck out eight, while Delaware got five innings from starter Dave Mullin who gave up six runs three earned and picked up his second loss of the season.

The second game of the doubleheader featured a gem of a pitching performance from Richmond starter Mike Smith who pitched five innings and gave up no runs while only allowing three hits.

Richmond catcher Josh Lamberg went four for four with four RBI to lead the Spiders to the victory.

Delaware got a home run from All-American Kevin Mench, who went 1-6 on the afternoon with one RBI. Andrew Salvo had the only other Hen RBI for the day on a sacrifice fly in the first game.

In the second game sophomore Tim Lorito gave up six runs in four innings, while Vinnie Keaser gave up six runs, including two earned runs in two innings. Rich McGuire pitched an inning of relief in the first game giving up four earned runs.

For Richmond, Rewers followed up a two home run game Saturday with a three for four performance with six runs and four RBI in Sunday's doubleheader.

Overall the Spiders outscored the Hens 37-14 in the three-game series.

Delaware will play next on Tuesday when the Hens open up their home schedule against Rider at 3 p.m. at Delaware Diamond.
