UD Baseball Drops Fourth Straight Game

NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware baseball team (1-7) lost its fourth straight game and broke a string of nine straight home opener victories by losing 8-3 to Rider (1-1) in a non-conference game at the Delaware Diamond on Tuesday.

The 1-7 start is the worst by a Delaware baseball team since 1953 when the Hens started with an identical record of 1-7 and ended the season with a 6-14-1 record.

Rider jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Delaware tied up the score on Chris Kolodzey RBI single that brought home Ryan Preziosi. Rider led 2-1 when Jeff Timperman hit a three-run home run off of starting pitcher Bryan Porcelli to stretch the lead out to 5-1. Delaware had the bases loaded with two outs in the seventh, but freshman Vince Vukovich struck out to end the threat. Rider added three more runs in the top of the ninth to put the game away in an inning highlighted by Michael Wenner's two run homerun. Kevin Mench added on a run in the bottom of the ninth with his team leading third homerun of the year, but that was all the Hens could muster in the bottom of the ninth.

Delaware, who left 13 runners on base, was led by Chris Kolodzey who went two for three with one RBI on the day. The Hens, who equaled their home loss total for all last season also got contributions from Ken Giles who went two for three with a run scored, while Mench went one for three with his third homerun of the season. Porcelli gave the Hens their longest outing of the season from a starter pitching 5 1/3 innings and giving up seven hits and five runs, while Vinnie Keaser came in relief and pitched 3 2/3 innings giving up three runs. Rider was led Jeff McTamney who was two for three with a homerun and three RBI and Michael Wenner who went two for five with a homerun two RBI. Kevin Barry got the win in relief pitching 2 1/3 innings and giving up one run and Rich Nelson picked up the save giving up one run in 2 2/3 innings.

Delaware will be in action on Wednesday at 3 p.m. when the Hens take on Villanova at the Delaware Diamond in their second home game of the season.
