UD Baseball Wins First Home Game of the Season

NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware baseball team
(2-11) won its first home game of the season by defeating
St. Joseph's (9-7) 14-0 on Thursday at the Delaware Diamond
in a non-conference contest.
The Blue Hens struck early when Kevin Mench
capitalized on an error from the St. Joseph's leftfielder on
a flyball that could have ended the inning by delievering a
two-run home run to start off the first inning and put
Delaware ahead early. Second baseman Andrew Salvo
opened up the scoring in the fourth inning by delievering a
two-out grand slam to put the Hens up 6-0. Delaware got a
second home run from Mench in the fifth and also got
homeruns from pinch hitters John Kincaid and Tony
Lofink. The Blue Hens were led by their best pitching
outing of the season which came from Dave Mullin who
pitched a complete game four-hit shutout for Delaware.
Delaware was led by Mench who went three for five with
four RBI and two home runs and Salvo who had four RBI.
Mullin gave Delaware its best outing of the season pitching
a complete game shutout. St. Joseph's got a two for three
hitting performance from Kevin Kirkby in a losing
effort.
