UD Baseball wins fourth straight game 4-1 over
Temple
NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware baseball team
(5-11) won its fourth straight game defeating Temple
(5-11-1) 4-1 in a non-league contest at the Delaware Diamond
on Thursday afternoon.
Temple struck first when Andrew Kush delivered an RBI
single in the third inning to bring home Bob Filler to make
the score 1-0. The game developed into a pitchers duel
between Bryan Porcelli and Jeff Rugg until the
seventh inning when Andrew Salvo laid down a
sacrifice bunt which turned into a two base error bringing
home Ken Giles and advancing Matt Voltz to
third. Shortstop Peter Maestrales delivered a one-out
double to make the score 3-1. Voltz added an extra run in
the eighth on an RBI double which plated Frank
DiMaggio. Delaware starter Bryan Porcelli pitched
eight innings and gave up no earned runs to get the win,
while Vic Sage came in to pick up the first save of
the season for Delaware. Temple starter Jeff Rugg pitched
eight inninngs and allowed four runs, one earned, and picked
up the loss for the Owls.
Delaware, who has given up two runs or less in five of
the last six games, was led by Maestrales who had a two RBI
double to put the Hens up for good 3-1. Vince Vukovich
also went 2-3 for the Hens. Porcelli, who has now
pitched 17 straight innings without giving up an earned run,
pitched eight innings and gave up seven hitswhile striking
out five to pick up his second win on the season.
Temple was led by Christopher Krusen who went three for
four on the day, while Jeff Rugg pitched a complete game
only giving up one earned run.
