UD Sweeps Towson to move into first place

NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware baseball team (21-16, 11-3) swept a doubleheader from the visiting Towson Tigers (17-13, 9-5) defeating them 4-3 in 12 innings in the first game and 7-3 in the second game.

In the first game Delaware ended Towson's school record seven-game winning streak and won its 20th game, making it 27 straight years that Delaware baseball has won 20 games or more. Junior Dave Mullin was one inning short of a school record in innings pitched in a game with a 12 inning complete game victory in which he gave up three runs and 11 hits in that span. Matt Voltz got Towson out to an early lead with a two-run single in the first inning. The Tigers got RBI from Nick Agoglia and Jason Sandner to tie the game up until the eighth inning when Scott Bacon, who had three errors in the game, had an RBI single to put Towson ahead 3-2. Frank DiMaggio and Jamie McSherry led off the bottom of the eighth with back-to-back doubles to tie the game and DiMaggio hit a sun aided double in the bottom of the 12th inning to plate Vince Vukovich and give Delaware the win with two outs in the inning.

In the second game Delaware fell behind early when Towson plated three runs in the first three innings all coming on RBI from Ryan Avila. However, Kevin Mench hit home runs in the fourth and fifth innings to help propel the Hens to victory. Bryan Porcelli pitched his fourth straight complete game and won his fifth game in a row giving up three runs and striking out seven for Delaware.

Delaware was led by a gutsy 12 inning complete game performance by Dave Mullin in the first game and a crafty seven inning performance by Porcelli in the second game as consistent pitching helped guide Delaware to the doubleheader sweep. Kevin Mench shouldered the offensive load in the second game with two home runs and four RBI. Mench has now knocked in 34 RBI in his last 18 games. Ken Giles added a homerun in the second game for the Hens.

Towson was led offensively by Ryan Avila, who had all three Tiger RBI in the second game and went two for three for the game. Peter Buck led Towson pitching going six and two thirds innings and only

giving up two runs for a no decision in the first game. Delaware will be in action on Sunday as the Hens play a doubleheader against Towson at 12 noon at the Delaware Diamond.
