UD Baseball splits with Towson

NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware baseball team (22-17, 12-4) lived and died by the grand slam as Frank DiMaggio hit a grand slam in the first game to lead Delaware to a 4-2 victory over Towson (18-14, 10-6). Scott Bacon hit a grand slam for the Tigers to lead Towson over Delaware 6-4 in game two in an America East doubleheader as the two teams split a doubleheader at the Delaware Diamond on Sunday afternoon.

The split kept the Blue Hens in first place, and gives them a two-game lead in the conference standings over Towson coming out of the weekend.

In the first game Towson jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a Dusty Reynolds RBI double, but Delaware struck back on a DiMaggio grand slam that put the Hens up for good. Rich McGuire bounced back from a rough outing in Hofstra last weekend to pitch his fourth complete game in five starts this season, while picking up the win to move his record to 5-1 on the season.

Delaware seemingly had everything under control in the second game after a Peter Maestrales homerun in the third inning and a Kevin Mench RBI single moved the score to 4-2 going into the sixth, but Scott Bacon, who committed five errors in the series, hit a grand slam off Delaware pitcher Jeff Romond to help the Tigers salvage the last game of the series. Colin McGonigal picked up the win, while Chris Fiora pitched two scoreless innings to pick up his second save of the season.

Offensively the Hens were led by DiMaggio, who went 2-4 on the day with two runs and a grand slam and Maestrales who went 2-5 and had a two run home run and two runs. McGuire pitched a complete game giving up only one earned run and striking out four in the first game, while Tim Lorito pitched five innings giving up five hits and three earned runs in the second game.

Towson got a big boost on offense by Scott Bacon who hit the game-winning grand slam in the second game in the sixth inning.

Delaware will be in action next on Thursday April 29 when the Henstake on Rider at 3 p.m. in Lawrenceville, N.J
