UD Baseball Outslugs UMBC 15-10

CATONSVILLE, MD -- The University of Delaware baseball team (16-14) overcame an 8-1 first inning deficit and broke a 10-10 tie in the top of the ninth to win 15-10 over UMBC (14-16) in a non-league contest played in Catonsville, Md. at Alumni field.

The win was the 997th of Delaware head coach Bob Hannah's career and allowed him to move three wins away from 1,000 for his career. Delaware will play four games at Hofstra this weekend, which will allow for the possibility of Hannah picking up win No. 1,000 this weekend. Delaware jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on one of two home runs by Peter Maestrales. However UMBC, struck back in the bottom of the first scoring eight runs in an inning where the Blue Hens committed two errors, had three walks and one wild pitch. Scott Crandell highlighted the first for the Retrievers with an RBI double and a two RBI triple in the first inning. The Blue Hens fought back in the third inning with Frank DiMaggio and Andrew Salvo solo home runs and a Maestrales two-run home run. The Hens trailed 10-5 going into the top of the fifth, but once again rallied scoring five runs behind Salvo's second home run of the day a two run homer, a Matt Voltz 2 RBI double and a Vince Vukovich single.

Both staffs calmed down keeping the game knotted at 10, until the top of the ninth when the Hens got five runs coming on a Vukovich RBI single which put them ahead and then a John Kincaid grand slam which helped put the game away. Rich McGuire pitched two scoreless innings to pick up the win and moved to 4-0 on the season.

Delaware was led by John Kincaid's four RBI which came off his grand slam. The Blue Hens also got two home runs apiece from Salvo and Maestrales, along with two RBI from Voltz and Vuckovich. In all the Hens belted out six home runs and also picked up their fourth grandslam of the season. Vic Sage had a rough outing giving up seven runs in a third of an inning, but Nick Spiewak pitched five and two thirds innings and gave up three runs to hold the fort down for the Hens. McGuire pitched two scoreless innings, while Dave Mullin came in the ninth to pitch one scoreless inning.

UMBC was led by Scott Crandell's three RBI and Jason Jubak's two RBI. The Retrievers have now given up 36 runs in their past two games after losing to George Washington 21-8 on Tuesday.

Delaware will be in action on Saturday when the Hens travel toHempstead, N.Y. to take on Hofstra in a doubleheadeer at 12 noon.
