UD baseball defeats UMBC, Mench breaks Total Bases
record
NEWARK, DE -- Kevin Mench had a home run and a
double to put him at 490 career total bases, which broke the
Delaware all-time total bases record formally held by
assistant coach Jim Sherman as he helped lead
Delaware (28-17) to a 4-1 victory over UMBC (19-22) on
Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference contest played at the
Delaware Diamond.
Delaware jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a home run by Ken
Giles to lead off the bottom of the first inning, but UMBC
tied the game in the third on an RBI single by Joe Nichols
with the bases loaded. Delaware prevented more runs from
scoring when Chris Kolodzey threw out Brian Thrash at
the plate to end the inning and the Retriever threat. The
Blue Hens jumped back ahead in the sixth inning when Andrew
Salvo and Mench hit back-to-back home runs to put the Blue
Hens up 3-1, which held up due to the relief pitching
efforts of Nick Spiewak, Dave Mullin and
Jeff Romond. The Hens tacked on an insurance run when
Mench scored in the seventh inning on an error.
Delaware was led offensively by the top of the order
Giles, Salvo and Mench who all went two for four, with a
home run and an RBI. Delaware starter Vic Sage went
four innings and allowed one run. Spiewak picked up his
first collegiate win going three innings and giving up no
runs, while striking out two. Dave Mullin came in for
one inning and gave up no runs and Jeff Romond picked
up his second save pitching one scoreless inning for the
Hens.
UMBC was led offensively by Brian Thrash and Scott
Crandell who both had three hits on the day, while Ryan
Lewis led the pitching coming on in relief and only giving
up one hit and one unearned run in three innings.
Delaware will be in action this weekend when the Hens
travel to Maine to take on the Black Bears in a doubleheader
at 5 p.m. on Saturday night.
