UD Baseball sweeps weekend set from Vermont
NEWARK, DE -- Peter Maestrales committed an error
that put Vermont up 7-6 in the top of the seventh inning,
and then atoned for his mistake by coming up with a
game-winning hit in the bottom of the seventh as the
Delaware Baseball team (13-12, 4-0) swept the weekend series
from Vermont (7-9, 0-4) to move its conference record to
4-0. The win was the Blue Hens 14th straight
conferencevictory dating back to last season and was the
10th straight victory at the Delaware Diamond.
In the first game Bryan Porcelli limited Vermont
to five hits andone run, while striking out seven and going
the distance to move his record to 3-2 on the season.
Delaware led 3-1 going into the bottom of the fifth when
Kevin Mench came up with a two-run home run. The Blue
Hens added six runs in the sixth on a two RBI double by
Maestrales, an RBI single by Andrew Salvo, a two RBI
double by Mench and a wild pitch which plated Mench.
In the second game Vermont went into the bottom of the
fifth with a comfortable 5-0 lead and two outs in the inning
with nobody on behind a stellar pitching performance to that
point from Jason Spaulding. Delaware got to Spaulding by
loading the bases and coming through with a two RBI double
by Chris Kolodzey, a two RBI double by John
Kincaid, followed by a Tony Lofink RBI single to
tie the score at five. Frank DiMaggio delievered an
RBI double to put the Hens up 6-5. Delaware looked like it
would claim the double header when Kyle Rikert grounded to
the shortsop Maestrales with two outs and thebases loaded,
but Maestrales threw the ball away to give theCatamounts a
7-6 lead. Ken Giles led off the bottom of the seventh
with a double andscored on Matt Voltz's sacrifice
bunt which was thrown away by the second baseman. Maestrales
came up in the inning with the bases loaded and delievered a
single to win the game for the Hens.
Delaware was led by Kolodzey who was 4-7 on the day with
five RBI. Andrew Salvo went 5-6 with three runs and
one RBI, while Kevin Mench was 3©5 with a home
run and four RBI on the day. The Hens also got good pitching
outings from Porcelli who pitched a complete game and only
gave up one run and Tim Lorito who came in relief for
Vic Sage in the second game and only gave up one
earned run in five and a third innings.
Vermont was led by Michael Cole who was 3-8 with three
RBI and Wade Rikert who wnet 4-7 with two runs on the
day.
Delaware will be in action on Wednesday when the Hens
play an exhibiton against the Wilmington Blue Rocks at
Frawley Stadium at 6:05 p.m.
